While flat plate models with a lattice grid represented a technological leap forward in 1881, tubular construction is robust technology with many advantages. With advancements such as the use of non-woven gauntlets encasing the positive spine plate, to more advanced manufacturing techniques, tubular batteries provide enhanced performance and improved reliability as compared to flat plate technology.
Tubular batteries use a special plate design with vertical spines and porous tubes (gauntlets) that securely hold the active material, making them more durable and resistant to corrosion. Compared to flat-plate types, tubular designs offer longer cycle life and reliability. Deep-cycle lead-acid batteries are available in two main types—Flooded (FLA) and Valve-Regulated (VRLA: AGM & Gel)—with tubular flooded batteries (OPzS) being the most reliable choice for demanding applications like inverters, UPS, and solar systems.
